Napthine Coalition gets young people on board

Bendigo’s successful Community Door Program will be expanded across the state with an additional $1 million investment under a re-elected Napthine Government, allowing more young Victorians to gain experience on government boards and committees.

Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith today joined Liberal candidate for Bendigo East Greg Bickley and Liberal candidate for Bendigo West Michael Langdon to announce that the Napthine Government will invest $500,000 into Lead On Australia’s Community Door program, with the contribution to be matched by the Bendigo Bank.

Mr Bickley welcomed the Napthine Government’s support for Lead On Australia, a local Bendigo-based organisation, which has been delivering the Community Door program for more than 10 years.

“The Community Door program has given more than 300 young people in the Bendigo area the experience of sitting on boards and committees,” Mr Bickley said.

“Under a re-elected Napthine Government this funding will see this effective program expanded across Victoria, reaching an additional 200 young people.

“This initiative has been a huge success in Bendigo, so it is great to see the program extended so that more young people get the skills they need to kick-start their careers and become more involved in decision making processes,” Mr Bickley said.

Mr Langdon acknowledged the Bendigo Bank, a strong local supporter of the Community Door program, for matching the Napthine Coalition Government’s commitment, creating a total investment of $1 million.

“Through this funding, government boards and committees will connect with more young people so that training, mentoring and support will be provided to more young participants and board members,” Mr Langdon said.

Mr Smith said the Napthine Coalition Government is committed to working with businesses to create new opportunities for young people to be involved in the decision making process.

Under a re-elected Napthine Government, applications for the Community Door program will be open to young Victorians aged 16-25 years old from mid-2015. Placements will be up to 12 months.
